In
their Arizona debut, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw chose 350 acres
of open farmland east of Scottsdale for the location of Talking
Stick Golf Club. The extraordinary 36-hole facility built by
the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community gets its name from
the ancient instrument used to mark significant historic events.
The two uniquely divergent golf courses assure a host of memorable
golf experiences, from links-style adventure through the
grasslands and ingenious bunkering on the North course, to a
traditional style of play on the tree lined fairways of the South
Course. The uninterrupted desert panorama takes in the distant
mountain ranges, reflecting cherished rural seclusion within an
urban environment. This facility is located in the East Valley
near Phoenix and features two eighteen hole courses. The
links-style North Course is a refreshing minimalist design that
features wide fairways void of any trees, strategic bunkering,
native grasses and unobstructed views. The North Course, which is
located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, offers
players the chance to run their shots. The greens are open, the
fairways wide, and the roughly carved bunkers look as if they've
been there for hundreds of years. "GOLFWEEK" selected
the North Course 82nd among "America's 100 Best Modern
Courses" for 1999. The South Course features subtle elevation
changes, fingered bunkers and heavily-treed landscaping of native
cottonwoods and hardwoods.
