With each passing day of 2008 we draw even closer to the beginning of the 2009 PGA Tour schedule and most importantly, the kick-off to the FBR / Phoenix Open.
Held annually since 1987 at the TPC Stadium, the FBR Open is one of golf's most watched and recognized events.
Festivites begin on January 26th with practice rounds, clinics, and smaller tournaments and with the opening round of the event starting on Thursday, January 29th. This year's event is boasting a $6 Million purse with the winner taking home $1.08 Million as the grand prize.
The FBR Open started out as the Phoenix Open back in 1932. It started out small but gained recognition after Bob Goldwater Sr. and the Thunderbirds took over at the helm and grew it to the current 132 player field with major coverage.
Last year's event saw a dramatic finish as J.B. Holmes just barely edged out hometown favorite Phil Mickelson in a playoff. It was Holme's second PGA victory on tour and his second win at the FBR Open.
Both players are sure to return along with some of the PGA Tour's biggest stars.
Tickets can be purchased at the entrance gate or at select locations. Admission is $25.00 per adult and free to children 17 and under with a paying adult. Proceeds from the event help local charities such as the Arizona Special Olympics and the Junior Golf Association of Arizona.
